The peculiarities of the main types of housing

As of today, it seems unimaginable that someone wouldn't distinguish one type of property from another. However, confusion between different dwellings occurs somewhat frequently due to the similarities among some of them. Understanding their characteristics is essential, either for cultural reasons or as a solution for those seeking a new home that suits a comfortable lifestyle.
 
Here, we present the main types of residences available in Spain.
 
The first aspect we examine pertains to single-family homes, which involve buildings where only one family nucleus lives. They are usually located in less crowded areas, with lesser environmental impact, although they are often less well-connected than others we will see later. We encounter three types:
 
• Detached house: surrounded by land and not sharing space with other dwellings. Pros include tranquility, privacy, and proximity to nature, although connectivity and security might not be its strong points.
• Semi-detached house: one wall is shared with a neighbor and they often have a good garden, but the side not attached to the neighboring house is exposed in a way that doesn't protect much against heat or cold.
• Terraced house: has houses on both sides, with a small garden, usually communal areas, and more neighbors than the others. They tend to have a higher price.
 
The second aspect we'll explore is multi-family homes, which, unlike the previous ones, are in contact with more dwellings and allow for the coexistence of more than one family unit. They are characterized by shared common areas, good connectivity, and are more affordable. Conversely, they offer few private outdoor spaces. We distinguish the following types:
 
• Studio: all spaces are in a single area, similar to an apartment, suitable for a young person or couple in need of an affordable home.
• Apartment: typically has one bedroom, a living room, bathroom, and kitchen, with not all areas connected. They are also designed as second homes for a single person or couples.
• Loft: found in industrial areas, they are large, open, and spacious.
• Flat: sharing a building, they usually have multiple rooms and bathrooms, with varying sizes.
• Duplex: two homes in the same building with separate entrances, interconnected via a staircase, offering a very large space.
• Penthouse: situated on the top floor of a building, with a bright terrace and usually wonderful views.
• Ground floor: at street level, with a garden or terrace for private use, but with more noise.
